Four area players can get a taste of big-time baseball with invitations to the combine for the Crab Claw Classic, which starts Friday.

A total of 80 invites were sent out, including those to Zach Davies and Alex Anwar of Linganore High, Colin Maye of Middletown, and AJ Bernardo of South Carroll.

The tryouts start on Friday at Joe Cannon Stadium, while the actual Classic is set for Saturday at 4 p.m.

Davies comes in as one of the top pitchers. The 6-foot-3 lefty was an Honorable Mention All-Monocacy Valley Athletic League Chesapeake Conference selection, after picking up three wins and a save with a 2.51 earned run average.

His Lancers' teammate, Anwar, has a tough decision coming up. The rising Linganore junior first-team All-Gazette and MVAL All-Chesapeake status for hitting .476. He led the conference with 30 hits and was second with eight steals, while adding four doubles and 19 runs.

But the 5-foot-9 center fielder and second baseman is also a member of the Mount Airy Gold Star Post 191 squad, which is playing in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Morgantown, W. Va.

Maye is being considered as a right-handed pitcher. For Middletown, he was an honorable mention All-Piedmont Conference pick, despite only two wins. However, his stats were hampered by the Knights going 8-10 overall. Maye did manage 35 strikeouts.

Bernardo, a rising senior at South Carroll, is being considered as a right-handed pitcher, outfielder and third baseman.
